The Ancora Story
During numerous visits to family in the Midwest, we began to envision turning our lifelong love for great coffees into a business venture. We'd lived for over twenty years in the Seattle area - the heart of the growing Specialty Coffee and espresso industry in the United States. This afforded us the opportunity to study with a renowned Master Roaster and to establish deep relationships with green coffee importers who seek out farmers focused on sustainable techniques of growing heirloom Arabica coffees.
The first Ancora Coffeehouse opened in downtown Madison, Wisconsin in 1994. With George roasting the beans and Sue pulling the espresso, Ancora quickly grew renowned for delicious specialty coffee and warm coffeehouse atmosphere.
Today, Ancora owns three Madison-area cafés and our coffee is proudly served at hundreds of independent coffeehouses and fine restaurants across the nation. The company's mission however, remains unchanged. We wish to share with you our unwavering commitment to handcrafting the finest Small Batch Artisan Roasted® coffees.

 True Specialty Coffees
Ancora Coffee Roasters® is dedicated to sharing the craft and romance of true specialty coffees. These are coffees grown on family farms and cooperatives where traditional Arabica plants have been tended for generations. These plants require more care but produce beans with unmatched flavor. Every year the farmers set aside a few bags of their finest beans to carry the estate's trademark -- these are the beans that make their way to Ancora. We search the world for these coffees then roast and cup dozens of samples of estate beans to find just the right coffees for Ancora.
Small Batch Artisan Roasted®
Ancora's signature roast is our full-city Artisan roast where coffee beans are a lustrous chestnut brown with traces of oil on their surface. This ‘sweet spot' is when the coffee peaks in flavor, body, aroma and brightness. Our roasters, using the traditional hands-on controlled method, roast to order in small batches. Every bag of Ancora coffee is freshness-dated so you're guaranteed to experience roaster-fresh flavor in ever cup.
