Armed with a Master's degree in Botany and working as a taxicab driver in Madison, Wisconsin, Mark Ballering - with only $1,200 of personal savings - opened the doors to our first coffeehouse in 1979.

The coffee house provided an alternative to the bar scene where people could gather to share good music, good conversation and good coffee. The staff helped out on a volunteer basis just like at home, which is exactly where our first Steep & Brew was - in the living room of a house!

After two years of business and with bills piling up, Mark happened upon a beautiful late-1890's coffee roaster. It served to teach us the fine art of roasting, and its finished product helped pay the bills. Today this beautiful roaster is but a conversation piece to look at and admire. We now use Sivetz Fluid-Bed Roasters.

By 1992, our precision roasted coffees had become so popular across the country that a move from our original roastery (now a tattoo parlor) was necessary. The move took us to a custom-built 6,000 sq. ft. production plant, which has since been expanded to 18,000 sq. ft..

Our dedication and commitment to the business of coffee through precision roasting, quality bean selection, strict standards, freshness and consumer education has propelled us to rank among the industry's proverbial specialty coffee roasters.

We have attracted very knowledgable and loyal customers throughout the years and hope to continue to build upon these friendships for decades to come.
